Where adventure awaits...

16 May, 2016 Queenstown, New Zealand

Sitting snug in the South Island on the edge of Lake Wakatipu, hugged on 3 sides by striking mountains and hilltops you will find Queenstown - the adventure capital of the Southern Hemisphere. As with the rest of the country the scenery here is amongst the most beautiful you could wish to find. The snow capped mountains tower over the crystal blue lake, with striking hilltops and valleys rolling to the distance that lend an instant cinematic wonder to the setting.

There is an energy to the small town that is palpable and will ignite the soul of any adventurer. The context of Queenstown is majestic with a quaint value, but a contagious adrenaline runs through the veins of its streets. In winter skiing is the main attraction but come summer choices range from boating, skydiving, horse back riding, bungee jumping, hiking and paragliding. Who could resist the thrill of this!

Twenty minutes spent spinning and turning in the air as we went, this was by far the best way to take in the natural marvels of that town.

While here my friend and I took the ski lift to the mountain top that gives you the iconic view over Queenstown itself and then went to meet our paragliding instructors. We decided what better way to see this stunning setting than to soar weightlessly over it. After our introduction and a safety run through we paired off and the large fabric wing of the paraglider was spread on the ground behind us. Once harnessed and strapped to my instructor he said to me, "Ok, on my count we start to run towards the edge of the mountain. Whatever you do don't stop. You ready?”

We had a stretch of green slope in front of us, then the mountain fell away. Adrenaline coursed through me as we started to run in tandem. Just before we reached the edge the paraglider lifted us off the ground up into the air. The feeling of sheer weightlessness and freedom was immense! A bird's eye view over Queenstown with The Remarkables as a backdrop sent shivers running through me. Twenty minutes spent spinning and turning in the air as we went, this was by far the best way to take in the natural marvels of that town. The best way to wrap up an adrenaline filled day upon landing is with arguably one of the best burgers in the Southern Hemisphere - Queenstown's mouth watering Fergburger!
